A truck carrying soldiers and armoured vehicles from the US Army and other allied nations was destroyed by a fire on Wednesday.
The vehicle was carrying US Army personnel and equipment on a road convoy to a training exercise in the US-Mexican border state of Nuevo Laredo when it was struck by a hail of fire at the Nueva Generación Border Patrol Agency checkpoint in Elkhart on Wednesday evening, the Elkharts police said.
The fire was extinguished by the arrival of an ambulance and the soldiers were taken to nearby hospitals.
The US Department of Defence said that it was in the process of assessing the cause of the fire.
The Elkharted Fire Department said in a statement that “it is currently under investigation by the Department of Defense.”
“The Department of the Army is working closely with the Elks Fire Department to determine the cause.
We appreciate the quick response of the Elk County Sheriff’s Department and the Elkins Fire Department, as well as the many others who have responded to this incident,” the statement said.
