Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that it plans to sell its first-ever fuel cell truck transport vehicle, a compact truck tractor with a range of more than 600 kilometres.
Toyota said the new vehicle will be based on a truck tractor design developed by the Japanese automaker and developed by its partner, the company said in a statement.
The new truck tractor is intended to complement the Toyota Corolla, Toyota’s next-generation small SUV, and the Toyota Camry.
The Toyota Corollas and Camrys were designed in response to the Toyota Yaris crossover crossover SUV, which debuted last year and is a direct response to consumers’ appetite for electrification.
Toyota’s new truck transport vehicles will be priced at $18,500 to $23,000 and can carry up to 1,200 people.
The company is currently developing the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus LS 500, which will go on sale later this year.
Toyota plans to release the first new fuel cells in 2021.
Toyota is currently working on fuel cell vehicles that will power trucks and buses and use compressed air to provide an electric drivetrain.
Toyota will also sell a fuel cell powertrain for the Toyota 4Runner.
It is the first time the Japanese carmaker will offer a truck fuel cell, but the company will sell the vehicle in other markets as it develops new vehicles.
Toyota and Mitsubishi Motor Co. have been working on a new fuel-cell truck transport system.
