AUSTIN, Texas — GM is in the process of exploring a potential expansion of its vehicle transport business, according to a person familiar with the matter.GM, which is in talks with other automakers to expand its fleet, is working on a possible vehicle transport division, the person said.
The vehicle transport industry is a key part of GM’s global operations, and it is unclear if it would be part of the expansion, the source said.GM is currently in discussions with automakers, the company said in a statement.GM’s expansion of the U.S. vehicle transport sector, which employs nearly 3,000 people, would come as a big blow to the auto maker’s efforts to expand into other countries and regions, said Greg Johnson, senior vice president of auto finance at Barclays.
The automaker is expected to report its financial results for the third quarter ended Sept. 30.
The company said it will announce a new product or service that would enhance the mobility and convenience of its customers.
GM has yet to reveal the specifics.
